The Making of the Lion King.
Things you may have not known about The Lion King

• Development for The Lion King began in 1988, production began in 1991.
• Alan Menken was originally wanted to do the soundtrack, but he was already busy working on Aladdin. 
• Was originally supposed to be named, “King of the Jungle.” This was changed because the Lion King is actually not based in a jungle.
• The idea of this movie came up during a conversation with Roy E. Disney, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Peter Schneider while they were promoting Oliver and Company.
• A lot of the movie is connected to Jeffrey Katzenberg’s personal life. 
• The original director of the film, George Scribner, disagreed with turning TLK into a musical, and was disappointed in the choice to choose Elton John for the music. After 6 months, he left the film because he didn’t think it would succeed.
• Timon and Pumbaa were supposed to originally sing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” Elton John was against the idea, it wasn’t until a screening of the film happened were Elton watched. He called the producers and told them that the film was practically ruined and to please let him change the song. They allowed this, and the song ended up being an Oscar Winner.
• Hans Zimmer came into the project, he brought Lebo, his friend who he had worked with previous movies with. It was his idea to add the african feel to the song, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and it’s Lebo’s voice you hear in the opening part of “Circle of Life.”
• Lebo was originally parking cars in a valet place in Los Angeles before the production of this film. 
• During the writing of the film, they creators were confused as to which direction the film would go, it is also considered to be Disney’s first film to have an original story. It was mentioned that The Lion King was loosely based off of Hamlet and Moses and Joseph’s stories from the bible.
• Many animators left this movie because they thought Pocahontas would have been a greater success.
• One of the hardest scenes to write in the movie was Mufasa’s ghost. They didn’t originally intend to have Mufasa make a reappearance, but they needed a great reason for Simba to change his mind and go back. 
• Many of the people in the making of this film, doubted the film’s success because people thought audiences would be interested in it. Don Hahn said, “and yet, we couldn’t help but wondered, does anybody really want to see a movie about a lion cub that gets framed for murder? But it was too late for that.”
• Weeks before the film was to be released, the 1994 Northridge earthquake happened, and it caused the animators unable to get to the studio. This leads to the film being finished in their own homes and garages.
